Industrial Work Dynamics. Protraits of Ethiopian Workers

As part of a sociological research project in Ethiopia about entrepreneurs moral commitment, Constance Perrin-Joly (CNRS research fellow appointed to the CFEE) realized pictures of people at work in the studied companies as well as in the city streets, in Mekele, Hawassa, Addis Ababa and in the Afar region, between 2011 and 2019. Fifteen of these pictures, fifteen portraits of workers in private companies, had been selected for a rotating exhibition, moving from a workplace to another. The exhibition also invites visitors, workers themselves, to share their impressions about the photographies though a questionnaire.

Exhibition WOmen at work! Visible and invisible work in Ethiopia, through the gender lens

These pictures had led to a exhibition at the Alliance Ethio-Française of Addis Ababa on the occasion of the Night of Ideas, from the 28th of January to the 17th of February 2018. Falling within the perspective of social photography, the project used photography to reveal the social recognition of work in Ethiopia. It shows the divisions, the cooperation forms and how professions are seen in a country in transformation. The exhibition enabled to explore three topics: work division, the eye on work and the (visible) professionnalization of work.
