Mission paléoanthropologique dans l’Omo (Omo Group Research Expedition)

Engagée depuis 2006 par Jean-Renaud Boisserie (CNRS, PALEVOPRIM), cette mission transdisciplinaire poursuit les travaux pionniers engagés depuis plus de 80 ans par les paléontologues français en Éthiopie. Elle déploie chaque année depuis 2006 plus de trente experts éthiopiens et internationaux (auxquelles s’ajoutent des personnes recrutées sur place) en pleine zone aride pendant plusieurs semaines, afin d’étudier l’impact des paramètres climatiques et environnementaux sur l’évolution humaine morphologique et culturelle dans le bassin du Lac Turkana, au cours d’une période s’étendant de 3,6 millions d’années (Ma) à 1 Ma. De nouveaux restes d’hominidés (en particulier au niveau de la transition mal documentée entre les australopithèques et le genre Homo) sont ainsi découverts chaque année. La mission collecte également de nombreuses informations sur l’évolution des autres animaux, des environnements, et des outils en pierre produits par nos ancêtres. Elle inclut des recherches doctorales (trois thèses soutenues en 2012, 2014 et 2017 ; trois en cours – dynamiques de dépôts sédimentaires, taphonomie et l’écologie, utilisation des outils lithiques). C’est la plus ample mission française de fouilles en Éthiopie, qui bénéficie du soutien du ministère de l’Europe et des affaires étrangères.

Jean-Renaud Boisserie est par ailleurs très engagé aux côtés de l’Authority for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage (ARCCH) dans des actions de conservation du patrimoine et de diffusion des connaissances scientifiques auprès du public en Éthiopie. Ce dernier volet inclut notamment l’élaboration des contenus scientifiques des deux galeries successives de paléontologie et préhistoire du musée national à Addis-Abeba, inaugurées respectivement en 2000 et en 2014. Il contribue également à la formation des personnels et des étudiants éthiopiens (plus de 200 heures de formation au niveau master ; encadrement de quatre étudiants au niveau master plus un en doctorat).
