Director
Jean-Nicolas BACH holds a PhD in political science (University of Bordeaux, Les Afriques dans le Monde). He has been working on politics in Ethiopia and has conducted research programs on the Horn of Africa. He was the coordinator of the CEDEJ Branch in Khartoum (Umifre) between 2016 and 2020. Recent publications : Sudan année zéro, Soleb-Bleu Autour, 2020 ; Routledge Handbook of the Horn of Africa, co-ed, Routledge, 2022. He has been director of Cfee since September 2022.

Secrétaire scientifique
Anne-Lise GOUJON has a PhD in Archaeology-Ethnology (Université Paris-Nanterre, 2021). She is working on pre-monotheist medieval societies of the Horn of Africa, through the study of megalithic practices and ceramic traditions. She joined the CFEE in september 2021.

Researchers

Marie BRIDONNEAU has a PhD in Geography (University Paris Nanterre, 2013), she is an Assistant Professor at the University Paris-Nanterre, at the LAVUE laboratory (UMR 7218). She is working on urban dynamics in Ethiopia and Eritrea (involuntary displacements, small towns, urban peripheries, rights to the city), and heritage construction (economic and political dimension of heritage dynamics). She is the director of the CFEE since September 2018.

Antoine GARRIC is a stone cutter, assistant Engineer at CNRS. After 8 years of working at the restoration of historical monuments in France, he spent 16 years with the responsibility for the reconstruction of the Karnak Temple Complex, in Egypt. At the CFEE he contributes to the restoration, conservation, and valorization of the Lalibela rock-hewn churches and assists archaeologists in the study of other rock-hewn and megalithic sites. As a specialist in photogrammetry, he is responsible for the production of orthophotographies of excavated sites and monuments. As part of transversal actions and knowledge transfer, he will conduct training in stone cutting techniques, the production of mortars, and experimental archaeology. He joined the CFEE in September 2020.

Pierre GUIDI holds a PhD in history from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and is a senior researcher at the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD).
After researching the role of education in the construction of the Ethiopian nation, he is currently working on the history of women’s education and activism in contemporary Ethiopia. He is chief-editor of the journal Cahiers de la recherche sur l’éducation et les savoirs, and member of the editorial boards of Sources. Materials & Fieldwork in African Studies, Annales d’Ethiopie, and Paedagogica Historica. Currently on assignment at the CFEE, he is a member of the research collective "Locations of Women Voices and Power in Ethiopia", which conducts its activities at the CFEE and at Addis Ababa University.

Caroline ROBION-BRUNNER has a PhD in Archaeology (Université de Genève, 2008), she is a CNRS researcher HDR at Université Toulouse - Jean Jaurès and TRACES laboratory (UMR 5608). She is a specialist in metallurgy of Africa and analyzes technical, economic, and social behaviors related to the production of metals. She has conducted research in Dogon country (Mali) and in Dendi (Benin). Since 2013, she is the director of a research program in paleometallurgy in Togo/Benin/Ghana. Her research involves ethnohistory, archaeological survey, excavation, and laboratory analyses (archaeometry, dating, anthracology). Her aim is to better understand the development of metallurgical processes and their societal and environmental impacts. She joined the CFEE in September 2020.

 Giulia BONACCI is historian, researcher at IRD / URMIS, and she develops her research at the interface between Ethiopia and its Diasporas (19th-21st centuries). She studies intellectual history, political imagination and cultural practices, and she is particularly interested in issues of migration, citizenship and transnationalism. Her current projects are related to slavery in Ethiopia, Cuba-Ethiopia relations ; and Pan Africanism.
